Who Can Donate Blood?

Blood donation is a simple and selfless act that can save lives. However, to ensure the safety of both the donor and the recipient, certain health conditions, medical treatments, vaccinations, and procedures may affect a person’s eligibility to donate blood.

You May Be Eligible to Donate Blood If:

You are in good general health.

You are free from fever, cold, cough, sore throat, or other active illnesses.

You have not undergone any recent medical procedures or treatments that require a temporary waiting period.

You have not recently received a blood transfusion.

You are willing to provide accurate health information and complete the required donor screening process.

You May Need to Wait Before Donating If You Have Recently:

• Received blood, plasma, platelet, or red blood cell transfusions.

• Been treated for tuberculosis, jaundice, dengue, chikungunya, malaria, typhoid, or certain infections.

• Undergone major or minor surgery.

• Had a tattoo, body piercing, acupuncture, cosmetic procedure, hair transplant, PRP therapy, or skin grafting.

• Received certain vaccinations.

• Taken antibiotics, steroids, blood-thinning medications, or other prescribed medicines that may affect donation eligibility.

• Undergone dental procedures such as tooth extraction, root canal treatment, scaling, or fillings.

• Traveled to regions affected by Zika virus outbreaks.

Special Considerations for Women

Women may be temporarily deferred from blood donation if they:

• Are pregnant.

• Have delivered a baby within the past 12 months.

• Are currently breastfeeding.

• Have experienced a recent abortion.

• Are currently menstruating.

Before You Donate

Every blood donor is required to complete a health questionnaire and provide consent for mandatory screening of donated blood for:

• HIV 1 & 2

• Hepatitis B

• Hepatitis C

• Syphilis

• Malaria

This screening process helps maintain a safe and reliable blood supply for patients who depend on blood transfusions.
